We took the Sun Rail (local train to Winter Park.) There are other stops available as well including several Orlando stops and Amtrack stations. The train is a fun easy option to some sites in Central Florida. It is inexpensive and predictable. BUT it does not run on Weekends. It seems to be primarily a commuter train so check the schedule before you leave. Arrive about 20 minutes early to park and buy tickets from the machine on the track. The closest station is Poinciana:5025 S. Rail Ave Kissimmee, FL next to Home Depot. https://sunrail.com/about/train-information/
We took the train to Winter Park which is a small college town about an hour away. It is easily walkable with shops, restaurants, and museums. The one hour “Scenic Boat Tour” on Lake Osceola is reasonably priced but you will need cash. We enjoyed the tour of the fancy homes, beautiful view, and the humor of our guide along 3 lakes connected by 2 canals. (There is a restroom next to the dock. https://www.scenicboattours.com/about-us
Rollins College is a short stroll away and makes for a nice walk along the lake. We saw a number of birds on the banks and along the waters edge. A relaxing day out.
There are several museums here but if you are interested in any of these do not come on a Monday when they are all closed! In the past we visited the Mores Museum which has a large interesting collection of Louis Tiffany including designer’s jewelry, pottery, paintings, art glass, leaded-glass lamps and windows. If you have any interested in Stained Glass this is well worth a visit. Check their website for special activities. http://www.morsemuseum.org/
